Our Process

Two or more parties or even teams may participate with a moderator to keep order.

Only one person may talk at a time. That person will have the floor (an actual piece of “flooring” will be placed in front of the speaker) and the listener will not interrupt. Listener is instructed to pay specific attention to what the speaker is thinking and feeling. After an agreed upon time limit, the “floor” now passes to the listener. The new speaker is now going to explain exactly what the previous speaker said. When it is agreed that understanding is achieved, the floor will stay with the new speaker and their position is presented followed by the “understanding” discussion.

The moderator (a professional ) will now direct the discussion based upon each position. It would be an accomplishment if the above portion can be achieved. The overall goal is to have individuals pause and “listen” before responding and strive to understand the other’s reasoning for a position.

"Engage not Enrage" exists to foster respectful dialogue in a divided world. We believe that listening to diverse perspectives is essential to understanding, cooperation, and progress. Our mission is to create a nonpartisan space in partnership with various Not-for-Profit organizations where people engage openly, acknowledge differences, and discover common ground. Through dialogue, we seek to replace division with understanding, anger with empathy, and silence with constructive conversation.

Division has clearly been sown and reality is based upon where you get your information. Trying to asses blame for this situation is counter productive. We need to create a path forward to understand each other. It is not assumed that you will or can “change minds” through this process but rather understand how positions are formed and developed.

Let’s choose engagement over outrage.
Let’s turn chaos into connection.
Let’s Engage Not Enrage.

The loudest voices are on fringe on each side. How we do we harness the energy of those who realize we are heading for more violence if we don’t change the trajectory?

suggests attempting to listen to someone’s position on various issues that you may not share. While there is a process for "Engage not Enrage", a possible ad campaign could lay the groundwork for Empathic listening which is what Engage not Enrage is built around.

Because democracy doesn’t fall apart from too many voices — it falters when we stop listening.
